Giving a boost to recycling

The town has joined an online incentive program called RecycleBank, which allows residents to earn points for recycling that they can redeem for coupons and specials at area businesses. The goal is to encourage recycling and reduce the amount handled by the town’s trash-disposal system, said Town Manager Dave Murphy. “In addition, we want to help local businesses and also put some extra money in the pocket of our residents,’’ he said. “We see multiple benefits to a program like RecycleBank.” Murphy said the town has a relatively low recycling rate, approximately 18 percent. To sign up, go to Participants can redeem their points for coupons at local restaurants, stores, supermarkets, and businesses, as well as online vendors. “We are proud to be one of the first communities to take such an innovative method to recycling, and we hope that more residents will continue to register,’’ Murphy said. “I expect some positive peer pressure as residents encourage their friends and neighbors to help them earn greater benefits.” - Wendy Chow
