Special focus on drunk drivers

The Police Department has been awarded funds to take part in a national campaign to curb drunken driving this holiday season. The state Executive Office of Public Safety and Security grant will be used to assign additional officers with the sole purpose of catching drunk drivers through Jan. 2. To reinforce the message, police have set up an electronic message board near Queen Anne’s Corner. Because the grant covers only the salaries of the additional officers, Queen Anne Wine & Spirits and Hi-Way Safety Systems Inc. of Rockland are paying for the advertising board, which will be passed by an estimated 22,000 vehicles in each direction daily. - Jessica Bartlett
