Avon school staff to study ‘Drive’

The town’s public school staff will discuss “Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us” by Daniel Pink at the annual faculty book club meeting this month. School superintendent Margaret Frieswyk said the faculty chose the book, which will be discussed during the Jan. 25 in-service training. “We’ve had a book club for three or four years as a professional development experience,” she said. An Amazon.com review says the book upends the idea that people are motivated by rewards, and instead argues that “the secret to high performance and satisfaction - at work, at school, and at home - is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world.” - Johanna Seltz
