Freeton elections hinge on school bill

A measure clearing the way for elections for the newly structured and fully regionalized Freetown-Lakeville School Committee is pending in the Legislature and will need to get approved soon if the new board members are to be on the ballot for April. “Hopefully we’ll get it done on time. If we don’t, then the election will have to wait for next year’s’’ town election, said Lawrence N. Ashley, chairman of the regional transitional school committee for the two towns. Ashley said that the legislative delegation is working hard on the proposal, which allows for four members from each community, to be elected in both towns. The measure will need legislative approval by mid-January to be in time for the elections, he said. He said the transitional committee is also working on next year’s budget and is hoping to present a more detailed report and address proposed technology improvements. - Elaine Cushman Carroll
