Kingston’s turbines are a signpost to energy independence

New turbine proof that municipal wind power is both possible and profitable

“The Independence’’ is one of five wind turbines recently erected in Kingston. Four are 2-megawatt utility-sized turbines capable of producing twice the amount of electricity consumed by homes in town. The fifth is a 100-kilowatt turbine built by the state to power the Kingston MBTA station’s layover yard. With turbine projects commonly running into opposition elsewhere, how has this small town managed to embrace wind power and push toward energy independence with little or no noise?
