Big issues on April 2 ballot

Voters will have a chance to pick the members of the first Housing Authority and the newly created Freetown-Lakeville Regional School Committee, and decide whether to implement the Community Preservation Act in the April 2 elections. Those wishing to run for town offices can pick up nomination papers through Feb. 13 at the Town Clerk’s office. Legislation that cleared the way for the election of the new school committee passed last week, narrowly making the deadline to be on the ballot, said Selectwoman Jean Fox. Under the measure, those wishing to run for the school committee will have to appear on both Freetown and Lakeville election ballots. Fox also said she is hoping voters will agree to a one percent surcharge on their property taxes under the Community Preservation Act that would result in matching state money and help to address the need of senior housing, affordable housing, and historic preservation.
