Heroic chaplains honored

The local American Legion will host its annual Four Chaplains Day church service at 10:45 a.m. next Sunday in Central United Methodist Church on School Street. The ceremony honors four Army chaplains who died after giving their lifejackets to fellow soldiers on Feb. 3, 1943, when the USAT Dorchester sank after being torpedoed. The chaplains, all lieutenants, were Methodist minister George L. Fox, Rabbi Alexander B. Goode, Catholic priest John P. Washington, and the Rev. Clark V. Poling of the Reformed Church in America. The four were posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, Distinguished Service Cross, and the Chaplain’s Medal for Heroism. Sunday’s service will include details on the heroic acts of the chaplains. - Christine Legere
