New high school provides lessons on dealing with substance abuse
Offers young recovering addicts a supportive environment in which to learn and grow
Independence Academy, a recovery high school for young people addicted to drugs or alcohol, has opened its doors with a small staff, a handful of students, and a multitude of local and state resources aimed at helping young people in Southeastern Massachusetts. “My sister would be alive today if she had this kind of opportunity,’’ said Scituate resident Amy LeFort at the academy’s opening last month. Elizabeth LeFort, 23, died of a heroin overdose on Jan. 13, 2011.
