Beach permits for all

Selectmen have approved use of nonresident parking permits at town-owned Silvershell Beach, an idea suggested by recreation director Jody Dickerson. The permits will be limited to 20 parking spaces per day in the lot near the town’s public beach, and will be handed out each day on a first-come, first-served basis, he said. The benefits are twofold, Dickerson said: Cutting down on parking by nonresidents on nearby side streets, and generating income for the town, which he said could be around $10,000 for the summer. The money would be used for maintenance of the area, he said. Parking at the beach lot is by permit only on summer days, and until this year was limited to residents, who park for free.
