Train parking fees raised

Over objections from residents who turned out for a meeting Feb. 28, the Board of Selectmen voted to raise the price of residents-only quarterly parking passes for the Sharon commuter rail station. The board considered doubling the $50 price to $100, as recommended by Eric Hooper, superintendent of public works, but voted 2-1 to set the rate at $85, effective for the quarter that starts July 1. Selectman Joe Roach, who voted against the motion, said he felt $75 was enough. Selectmen said it was the first price increase in about 15 years. Some of the revenue will go toward maintenance, and the board hopes some of it will help find long-term solution to the problem of overcrowding at the lot. One possibility, Selectman William Heitin said, would be to build a single-story parking garage for residents. - Jennette Barnes
