Towns consider Community Preservation Act surtax

Milton and Canton will decide this spring whether to adopt the state’s Community Preservation Act and raise their taxes to create a pool of money that can be spent on historic preservation, affordable housing, open space, and recreation. If voters say yes, the towns will join the 148 communities in the state already in the program, which started in 2000 and allows a property tax surcharge of up to 3 percent.
