Cash windfall in back taxes

With delinquent taxpayers paying off their overdue property tax bills and investors buying tax titles at an auction this month, the town brought in close to $800,000, according to Finance Director William McKinney. “We actually had quite a few people pay off their debts prior to the auction, about $520,000 in 25 to 30 properties,’’ he said. “Then we sold 15 more tax titles for about $270,000. It was definitely successful.’’ Investors paid off the debt owed the town on delinquent property and can charge the property owners 16 percent interest on the amounts, he said. McKinney said the town plans to hold another tax title auction in a year or two. “Unfortunately, there are still people who owe [back taxes], and [an auction] is so much easier than foreclosing,’’ he said.
