Town wants 9/11 steel

The town still is waiting to hear whether it will get any steel from the fallen World Trade Center towers in New York for a local 9/11 memorial. The original request was denied, but town officials have asked again. “We’re keeping our fingers crossed,” said Weymouth firefighter Brad Flannery, who is leading the effort. Preliminary plans call for building a memorial outside the Fire Department’s headquarters on Broad Street, Flannery said. He said the steel would be incorporated as “a symbol of America’s strength and resilience. We want it to be a memorial to the people who passed away, but also have an educational component,” he said. - Johanna Seltz
