SHARON: Voters reject liquor stores


Sharon Town Meeting narrowly defeated an article Monday that would have allowed the town to pursue a home-rule petition to license liquor stores. Under existing local policy, the town licenses food stores to sell beer and wine, but not spirits. Voters rejected the article with 112 votes in favor, 125 opposed. Prior to the final vote, Town Meeting approved an amendment favored by local store owners to expand the geographic area where liquor stores would have been allowed, but the article ultimately failed. A second alcohol-related article, to reduce the minimum number of seats an eatery must have for all-alcohol service from 50 to 18, passed by a voice vote, according to Town Clerk Marlene Chused. Voters also defeated a ban on dogs at Veterans Memorial Park and Beach. Jennette Barnes
