More than 15 percent of the town’s 37,692 registered voters hit the polls on May 12 to vote in the local election. In the selectman’s race, Kenneth A. Tavares defeated Richard J. Quintal Jr., Robert P. Morgan, and John R. Moody for a three-year term. In the other contested race, Malcolm A. MacGregor beat Kenneth E. Buechs for a five-year term on the Planning Board. Voters also approved, 3,213 to 2,222, the lone ballot question to request the Board of Selectmen to ask the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to hold off on renewing the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station’s license until certain safety recommendations are implemented at the facility.
