Residents voted in a nonbinding referendum last Tuesday against hosting a resort casino operated by the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head Aquinnah. Just over 20 percent of registered voters cast ballots, opposing the planned $167 million resort casino, 954 to 308, according to unofficial results. Representatives from the Wampanoag tribe, who have said the project remains viable, are focused on a spot in town for a resort casino: 400 acres a short distance from Long Pond, just off Route 140, between exits 8 and 9. The tribe submitted a bid for a casino under Massachusetts gambling legislation, and it has the option to buy the land in Freetown.
