New councilor for District One

The Town Council appointed Francis Burke last week to fill the vacant District One council seat left open when Victor Pap resigned in May. Burke was the town’s director of veterans services until he retired in January and is a past president of the North Weymouth Civic Association. A Town Meeting member for 20 years, he ran unsuccessfully for councilor at large in 2000 when Weymouth switched to a mayor and council form of government. “It’s a privilege to represent my neighborhood,” Burke said. “I’ve been involved in the community since I moved here in 1979.” He said his priorities include repairing the area’s sea walls and minimizing the impact of the Fore River Bridge construction on the neighborhood. He said he has not decided whether he will run when his term expires in 2013.
