Recreation funding change defeated

A special Town Meeting June 7 defeated two articles that would have rescinded Marshfield’s revolving fund for recreation and created a different revolving fund. The proposed fund would have required that all Recreation Department program fees be spent on recreation, and not transferred to the general fund. The articles were brought by resident petition. The vote was 94 to 75 against the first article, and the second was defeated without a counted vote. Petitioners were concerned that recreation money could be used for other purposes, but after the meeting, Town Administrator Rocco Longo said recreation fees are normally spent on recreation and that very little money has been transferred to the general fund over the years. Town officials also said that in order to be legal, the change would have to be made at an annual Town Meeting, not a special meeting.
