Wareham landowners riled up over fees

Some residents on hook for thousands in betterment fees

A $3.8 million project for a new water main was completed in 2009, but a few unhappy taxpayers in Wareham are fighting betterment fees that are as high as $100,650 over 20 years. The head of the water department says the law is clear about betterment fees on properties that can be developed into homes, but these landowners say they have no such plans. They’ve sued, but no court date is has been set.
