Board to revisit ban on dogs at beaches

When the Sharon Board of Health meets Monday, it plans to revisit its June 4 vote to ban dogs from the Lake Massapoag beaches. Supporters of the ban aim to protect beachgoers from pathogens in dog feces, which can include E. coli and parasites. At the Board of Health meeting three weeks ago, town officials said employees would document the volume of feces found on the beach in the intervening weeks and report back to the board. The board indicated it would consider that information and decide whether to alter the ban. Skeptics have suggested that not enough feces are left on the beach to present a significant threat. Existing restrictions apply to when and where dogs can be present on beach property, but some residents have said the signage is confusing. Monday’s meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall.
