Bill Kovatis was recently selected to receive West Bridgewater’s 2012 Victor R. Flaherty, Sr. Civic Award. The town initiated the annual award last year to honor residents for their volunteer work. Kovatis, who worked 15 years for the town’s highway department and retired in 2010 as the acting superintendent, was presented with the award at the annual Town Meeting June 11. Kovatis’s volunteer efforts have included organizing the town’s annual commemoration of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorism attacks; organizing collections for the West Bridgewater Food Pantry; and cleaning monuments and erecting flags for Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Separately, Town Meeting approved a fiscal 2013 budget and appropriations to purchase a police cruiser and a Forestry Department truck, and to continue renovations to Town Hall. The meeting rejected funding for a new fire truck. A special Town Meeting held within the annual meeting authorized funds to study the condition of the library building.
