Around this time of year, Scituate Town Hall is usually packed with people, lined up all the way down the hall and out the front door, waiting to renew their expired stickers for beach parking or the transfer station.

This year, however, after months of urging Scituate residents to get their beach stickers early, officials are hopeful of avoiding the Fourth of July sticker rush.

Town employees have been selling both beach and transfer-station stickers since March, to coincide with the new March expiration date. Previously, beach stickers weren’t sold until April and didn’t expire until June.

The hope, town officials said, was that the new deadline, which takes effect next year, will make the sticker application processing easier on Town Hall staffers, who are typically dealing with a lot of paperwork for the end of the fiscal year in late June.

Although Scituate officials extended the expiration for stickers for this year until June 15 to let residents get used to the new policy, the push to have residents make early applications online, through the mail, or at a kiosk at Town Hall has paid off.

“I personally don’t expect the big lines that we’ve had the previous couple of years,” said Jane Cunniff Lepardo, Scituate’s treasurer/collector.

As of early this week, Scituate had sold $597,515 in stickers, including all types of beach stickers and transfer station stickers, which range from $10 to $200 apiece.

“We’ve sold a significant amount already, and people have been great in getting them right away,” Lepardo said.

She said things have been hectic in the last two weeks, with extra staff brought in from such places as the Department of Public Works and the Recreation Department. The town also plans to put on extra staff though this Friday, just in case more people come in late.

Although many had come in weeks ago, several residents still waited until their stickers expired on June 15 to get renewals.

“It’s good. Next year will be so much better because they expire on March 31, which isn’t such a busy time period in this office,” Lepardo said.
