Swimming as a winter varsity sport has been added at the Old Rochester Regional High School, under conditional approval of its school board last month. The proposal for the coed team was promoted by a group of parents who cited the increased popularity of swim teams in high schools, and the number of children in the regional district’s towns of Marion, Mattapoisett, and Rochester who are in swim programs. The committee said the district will not be responsible for any funding for the first two years of the program. After that, according to the district’s website, “future years have the district assuming gradual financial responsibility for the sport if the school’s finances are sufficient to assume it.” The funds must be raised and given to the district by Oct. 1.
