About Tabor Academy’s prized schooner

The Tabor Boy.

Every summer, Tabor Academy invites students to participate in a week-long sailing adventure called “Orientation At Sea.” The programs allows 14 to 16 new freshmen, as well as some sophomores, to learn sailing skills from Tabor teachers and student crew members. Six of these voyages have been held in July and August, and the last one this summer is wrapping up this week.

Schooner was built: 1914, near Amsterdam

Previous uses of schooner: North Sea pilot schooner; schoolship for the Dutch merchant marine; private yacht

Previous names: Pilot Schooner #2; Bestevaer

Schooner was donated to Tabor and first arrived in Sippican Harbor: May 20, 1954

Current name: SSV Tabor Boy (SSV stands for Sailing School Vessel)

Length: 92 feet, 10 inches

Rig height: 95 feet

Sail area: 3,540 square feet
