Giving veterans a tax break

Veterans who own their homes are eligible for the property tax work-off program approved at the Nov. 19 Special Town Meeting. Participants can receive up to a $1,000 real estate tax credit. Veterans whose status is approved by the town veterans’ agent will be chosen by lottery for the five positions available in the first round. Those selected will do office work for various town agencies such as answering telephones, driving for Meals on Wheels, and handling mail. The program is similar to one for seniors.
