Buddies needed for Special Olympics program

The Middleborough branch of the Old Colony YMCA will start a new session of its Special Olympics program for special needs children between the ages of 2 and 7 on Jan. 13. Peer models are needed to help with skills development, along with volunteers who can be “buddies” with participants. Volunteers may be students or older children with disabilities. Participants will learn new skills each week, including throwing, kicking, and catching. During the final week of the 10-week session, children will showcase their skills in an Olympics competition. All participants will receive medals. Melissa Oddi-Morrison, coordinator for the Middleborough Young Athletes Program, promises the program will be a good time for all involved. “We just finished the fall session, and the kids had a lot of fun,” she said. For more information, contact Oddi-Morrison at 508-574-4898 or e-mail moddi@verizon.net. The program runs through March 17.
