Officials decline tax split

Hingham officials have chosen to continue to tax residents and businesses at the same rate, despite suggestions from the town Assessor’s Board to raise the rate on commercial taxpayers. The theory is to save the town’s 7,650 residential taxpayers money by putting a larger burden of the tax base onto the 407 commercial properties. But as businesses would have to be taxed $7 more for every dollar the residents are to save, selectmen voted against the idea. “We said, ‘Not now.’ We should study it first so people can have adequate time to plan for it,” Selectman Bruce Rabuffo said. A group will be put together to take a detailed look at the tax base to see if and when it should be treated differently.
