The John Glass VFW Post on Station Street has a license to serve alcohol , but selectmen are questioning the use of that same license for a basement bar in the building called The Driftwood Lounge. The board discussed the issue at its Nov. 19 meeting, but decided to continue that discussion at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Town Hall. According to Selectman Allin Frawley, The Driftwood Lounge, run by Canteen Corp., appears, at least on paper, to be a separate entity from the VFW Post, having its own set of rules for admission. As such, it would not be allowed to operate under the VFW’s liquor license. Frawley thinks it’s probably a paperwork issue. “I think it’s the same guys running both [bars], so it may just be a paperwork mix-up,” Frawley said. “Like a lot of things, it wasn’t done correctly in the past. We’re not trying to jam anybody up. We’re just trying to get to the bottom of it.” While there was some talk of shutting down the basement bar until the issue is satisfactorily settled, the town manager said that couldn’t be done without first holding a hearing. A hearing has been set for 7:45 p.m. Monday, to allow selectmen to take action if they are not satisfied with the progress the VFW has made.
