Two area communities score grants to clean up coastal waters

Duxbury and Kingston are among six communities to receive grants aimed at cleaning up coastal waterways through the state’s Coastal Pollution Remediation Program. Duxbury will put its $124,115 award toward installation of three storm-water filtration systems to reduce polluted runoff from Bay Road into Duxbury Bay. The project is part of a decade-long effort to improve bay water quality, according to Duxbury conservation administrator Joe Grady. “We’ve done analyses to determine where the pollution is most prevalent; then we apply for grants,” Grady said. “The Public Works Department will install the new systems in the ground this spring.” Kingston will apply its $124,495 in state grant money toward controlling bacteria-laden storm-water runoff from two outfall locations into the Jones River Estuary.   “The Jones River Watershed Association is thrilled the town got the money, and we look forward to the result,” said the agency’s executive director, Pine duBois. “It will address long-known issues affecting the mouth of the river.” Each town is coming up with about $41,000 in matching funds. Grants were also awarded to Barnstable, Bourne, New Bedford,  and Salem.
