Habitat for Humanity house coming

The town is on its way to getting its first Habitat for Humanity house, after a Town Meeting vote Nov. 28 approved $30,000 in Community Preservation Act funds for the cause. The house will be built on a town-owned lot on Route 6, where a decrepit house will be torn down, said George McTurk, past president of the Buzzards Bay Area Habitat for Humanity. The demolition work is being donated by G. Lopes Construction of Taunton, McTurk said, with architectural work donated by Saltonstall Architects in Marion. The house will be sold for about $85,000 to a qualified family, which will be responsible for paying the no-interest mortgage, taxes, and insurance, and supplying 300 hours of “sweat equity” in the building of the home. For information on applying for housing, visit www.buzzardsbayhabitat.org.
