Rewriting town manager rules

A Special Town Meeting will decide Monday whether to ask the Legislature to change the rules for appointing Cohasset town managers. Current rules prohibit anyone from holding the job if they have served on any elected or appointed town board within the previous year. The proposed change would apply the prohibition only to selectmen and extend the time to 15 months. In a statement, the current Board of Selectmen said the change “would widen the pool of possible candidates and would allow promotion from within our existing group of dedicated town officials.” Critics say the original intention was to prevent favoritism and that the change is tailored to acting Town Manager Michael Milanoski, who served on two appointed boards in the year before he was named to the town’s top executive job.
