Young hero recognized by state

Third-grader Skye Cordeiro is the latest recipient of the state Department of Fire Services’ Student Awareness of Fire Education (SAFE) Young Hero Award. The Lakeville 9-year-old’s mother was recently kicked in the face by a horse, according to department spokeswoman Jennifer Meith. Cordeiro got his mother away from the horse, put the horse in the barn, called 911, and applied basic first aid until help arrived. “She knew what to do and she stayed calm, which could be hard when you’re a child and your parent is injured,” Meith said. A member of the Lakeville Fire Department nominated Cordeiro for the Young Hero award. Cordeiro was one of 280 award recipients, receiving a certificate of recognition and a “Young Hero” T-shirt.
