Trying to save boys volleyball

The Wareham High School boys’ volleyball squad won’t compete this spring, unless the team can raise enough money to fund the sport themselves. Boys’ volleyball has been around for more than a decade, but was cut from the school budget over the summer, according to coach Ben Kaeterle. The Vikings must raise $6,000 before the season starts in March to cover referee fees, the coach’s salary, and transportation costs, and Kaeterle said the players are optimistic that they can pull it off. “They’re being good sports about it,” said Kaeterle. “They just want to play.” In addition to collecting donations, Kaeterle plans to hold a fund-raising event in the coming weeks. He’s also asking businesses to donate gift certificates and merchandise that can be used as prizes in a raffle. “We’re open to anything right now . . . anything can help,” he said. Those who wish to contribute can contact Kaeterle at 508-863-6197 or katmansports@yahoo.com.
