Decorating their home has been a tradition for Cheryl Smith and her family for 22 years. “We love Christmas and we like to make people happy,” she said. When the Smiths finish decorating on Thanksgiving Day, people in their neighborhood line up to see the lights turned on. Some who walk or drive by leave thank-you cards and gifts in the mail. The family started switching to LED lights for the display, but their electric bill still increases by about $400, Smith said. The tradition will continue, despite the cost. “I love it,’’ she said. “I would never want to stop doing it.”
