Selectmen ratified a contract for the police patrolmen’s union that gives officers a 2 percent pay increase for the current fiscal year. The agreement also boosts detail pay to $44 per hour beginning Jan. 1. The union and town had been unable to reach an agreement since the last contract expired in 2010, and the newly ratified contract runs only until June 30. Selectmen also ratified a contract for Police Chief Bruce Gates that runs from July 2013 to June 2016, and includes a provision for an additional year’s extension. Gates will be paid $131,000 a year, with annual salary increases at the discretion of the selectmen. The contract allows Gates to live in either Middleborough or Lakeville; the chief’s previous contract limited residency to Middleborough.
