School security reviewed

Scituate is making big changes to its school security in light of the tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. According to a memo sent from Superintendent John McCarthy, all exterior doors will now remain locked when school is in session and visitors must be buzzed in. Although the high school does not have a buzzer, one will be installed shortly. In the meantime, a staff member has been stationed at the main entrance. Interior and exterior doors at any school that do not lock properly are also being repaired or replaced, McCarthy said. Cameras will also be added strategically. “We’ve had a security company in and they will be adding additional alarms and cameras. For example, cameras will be placed outside buildings with views of drives and parking areas,” McCarthy added. The schools’ safety plans are also in the process of being reviewed, and each school will practice an announced lock-down drill in January as a precaution. “I recognize these are not the subjects we always want to focus on or talk about, but our first priority is student and staff safety,” McCarthy said. “We can only create a positive learning environment for children to thrive in when they feel safe and secure.”
