Students finishing handrail for senior center ramp

Students in the Silver Lake Regional High School’s metal fabrication program are installing handrails on the new handicapped-access ramp at the Pope Tavern senior center’s front door. Council on Aging director Barbara Brenton said the railings were expected to be ready by Christmas, but work was stalled a bit by rain. “It’s getting close to completion and we’re excited,” Brenton said. When the ramp opens for use, it will mark the first time the center, headquartered in a centuries-old former tavern across from Town Hall, will have two accessible entry points. An entrance at the side of the building is equipped with a ramp, but the doorway is too narrow to accommodate large wheelchairs.
