Local library wins grant for baby boomer programming

The Ames Free Library will use a $7,500 Library Services and Technology grant to develop six months of programming for local baby boomers, beginning in late February and running into September. "The focus is on productive aging," said library director Uma Hiremath. "Programming will be in five broad areas: recreation, informational needs, lifelong learning, volunteerism, and making memories." The town has nearly 5,000 residents between 55 and 74 years old, Hiremath said. Boomers can look forward to a travel series, outdoor adventure program, meditation classes, lectures on financial planning and healthy living, training in new technology, lectures on genealogy, workshops on memoir-writing, and creation of oral histories in video format. The library staff will tap the knowledge and talents of the Council on Aging, Easton Historical Society,   Natural Resources Trust of Easton, and several other local business and community groups.
