Marshfield town government gets poor review

A state Department of Revenue review of Marshfield town government deemed the structure of local government inefficient and made numerous recommendations for improvement. The review, requested by the Board of Selectmen and presented to the board Monday, suggests that Marshfield give the administrator more authority, reduce the number of boards, and make more boards appointed instead of elected. It also calls for creating the position of finance director, reviewing the town charter and bylaws, and redesigning the town website. In an interview, Matthew McDonough, chairman of the selectmen, called the report by DOR’s Division of Local Services “a great, objective, apolitical review of our town government,” and said he was interested in ideas to make the structure of government more “vertically aligned.” The report said the town is in “relatively good financial condition” and praised Town Administrator Rocco Longo for helping to improve fiscal policies.
