Art appraisal day

Responding to public demand, the South Street Gallery will offer its Art Appraisal Day on Jan. 26. According to gallery manager Kate Sotolova, the program, featuring Hingham resident and fine art appraiser Arthur Garrity, has been successful in the past, with dozens of people coming in to see what their art is worth. “Many times people are just curious to know what they have,” Sotolova said. For people who want to sell or insure an item, they can get an appraisal at a lower price than they would likely find elsewhere. The program has even had its “Antiques Roadshow” moments; one woman discovered her family heirloom was a $75,000 Robert Spear Dunning still life. The appraisals will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Etchings, prints, original oil, or watercolor paintings may be submitted for review. Customers can pay $10 per appraisal, or $25 for three appraisals, with all proceeds donated to the Hingham Interfaith Food Pantry at Second Parish.
