An old, cracked dam in Hanover must be repaired or destroyed, according to a certificate of noncompliance issued to the town by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. The Factory Pond Dam has been found to be a hazard because of erosion and cracks that affect its structure and shape, as well as leaking and vegetation problems. Since the dam also borders Hanson, town officials from both communities are working cooperatively to make the repairs. The dam must be adequately repaired, breached, or removed by July 13, 2014, according to the state.
