Jared Murphy was sworn in as a member of the Hanson Fire Department during a recent selectmen’s meeting. Murphy was hired last March to fill a vacant firefighter’s position, contingent on successfully completing recruit training at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy. Murphy graduated from the academy on Dec. 21, according to Fire Chief Jerome A. Thompson Jr. Murphy grew up in Hanson and now lives in Abington. He had been a Hanson call firefighter for five years, and worked for several years as a paramedic for a private ambulance firm. Thompson said that Murphy was commended by the Hanson Board of Selectmen for an October 2011 incident in which he and a firefighter from another community, both off duty, performed CPR on a man who had collapsed in his yard in Abington and helped save his life.
