MIAA official regrets remark

A spokesman for the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association is apologizing for calling gymnastics “a girls’ sport” — a remark that drew sharp criticism from many area gymnasts, including Olympic champion Aly Raisman.

“Sorry I said what I said,” spokesman Paul Wetzel said Wednesday. “I was trying to make a point, and I put my foot in mouth.”

Comments

Wetzel regrets that the comment reflects his true intentions. He does not explain any gap between what he said and the point he was "trying" to make, which is deeply sexist.

The reference to Wheaties boxes and future endorsements is also inappropriate. The constituency of the MIAA is young, amateur athletes. The percentage who will go on to professional, celebrity status is vanishingly small, and not  relevant to play at the scholastic level.
