Nasketucket Bay conservation land purchase discussed

The Buzzards Bay Coalition is seeking $200,000 from Mattapoisett to help fund a $6 million purchase of 263 acres as part of the Nasketucket Bay Land Conservation Project. The coalition hopes to protect 398 acres in Mattapoisett and Fairhaven, said Brendan Annett, a coalition official. The Mattapoisett land connects to the Nasketucket Bay State Park near Brandt Island Road, and could connect to an existing bike path in the park. Annett said the project would be the largest coastal land-preservation project in the state, and is necessary to protect wildlife habitat and agricultural land. Selectmen directed Town Administrator Michael J. Gagne to look into funding for the project, which recently secured a $1 million grant from the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Other federal and state grants will help pay for the remainder, Annett said.
