Grant to help English language learners

Quincy’s public schools, in partnership with Quincy Asian Resources and the Quincy Historical Society, have received a $241,609 grant from the state to create a four-week summer program to help students learn English. The program, called the SWELL Academy (Speaking and Writing for English Language Learners), hopes to attract about 100 middle and high school students. “There is no cost to the students,” said Beth Hallett of the Quincy Public Schools, who added that there will also be instruction in science and social studies. According to Assistant Superintendent Colleen Roberts, “academic language takes longer for [English language learners] to acquire, as opposed to the social conversational language, so by adding in the social studies and sciences, we’re helping to build that academic vocabulary in those areas.”
