Marijuana sales on Halifax agenda

A Special Town Meeting on April 8 will give Halifax residents a chance to discuss whether they want to allow medical marijuana dispensaries to be located here.

Two articles — one banning the dispensaries outright and the second setting the earliest opening date for one of June 2014 — will go before voters at the meeting set for 7:30 p.m. at Halifax Elementary School.

Statewide voters approved the ballot question last fall legalizing use of medical marijuana and allowing for the creation of 35 dispensaries statewide.

Town Administrator Charlie Seelig said the state is expected to set licensure regulations for the dispensaries on May 1 and town officials were concerned that one could open up before voters had a chance to voice their opinions on them at the regular Town Meeting May 13.

“We want to have the townspeople have their say,” Seelig said.
