Voters Tuesday re-elected one School Committee member and chose a new member from among three first-time candidates in the only contested townwide race on the ballot. Town Clerk Cheryl Mooney reported that 3,750 of the town’s 17,964 registered voters participated, a 21 percent turnout, a little bit better than her expected turnout of between 15 and 20 percent. Incumbent Joyce Hussein was elected to a second School Committee term with 1,783 votes, and will be joined on the board by Carol Brown, an assistant headmaster at Dorchester Academy, with 1,377 votes. The pair out-distanced challengers Patricia MacNeil, 1,317 votes, and Debra Cote, 1,191 votes. Thomas Recupero ran unopposed for the selectman’s seat being vacated by John Stagnone. Recupero, a former member of the redevelopment authority, had 2,665 votes. In anticipation of vacancies in the races for Town Meeting representative seats, Town Moderator Howard Hansen had scheduled precinct caucuses at Stoughton High for Precincts 5, 6, 7, and 8 for Thursday in hopes of filling the seats in those precincts. Mooney said Wednesday she was still certifying figures to report to the state and giving Hansen the names and addresses of write-in candidates for Town Meeting, and had yet to determine how many of the 62 seats up for grabs have been filled.
