Town Meeting Monday

Sharon voters go to Town Meeting on Monday for a warrant of 27 articles, including a local meal tax of 0.75 percent and an increase in the local room tax, to 6 percent from 4 percent. Town Meeting considered the room-tax increase in November 2011, but defeated it at the urging of local innkeepers. This year, two zoning articles would make changes intended to allow development of an 80-to-88-unit assisted living center on 6.2 acres on South Main Street opposite the Shaw’s plaza. Also on the warrant are temporary moratoriums on medical marijuana dispensaries and adult entertainment facilities, and a property-tax work-off for veterans. The article would allow veterans to do work for the town and earn a rebate of up to $1,000 per year on their real estate taxes. Sharon has a similar provision for the elderly. Town Meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Sharon High School.
