Fire department gets grant

The town fire department has received a $1,939 grant from the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation to buy firefighting gear. The department is matching the grant with its own funding, said Fire Chief Andrew Murray, the total to be used for needed equipment such as gloves, helmets, protective goggles, and boots. Funding is through the US Department of Agriculture’s forest service, and is administered by the state’s Bureau of Forest Fire Control and Prevention. The grants provide financial assistance to rural, nonprofit volunteer and call fire departments serving communities with fewer than 10,000 residents. Mattapoisett’s population is approximately 6,000.
