A selectmen’s hearing on the future of the Marshfield Food Pantry has been scheduled for May 20, in response to a resolution Town Meeting passed in April calling on selectmen to consider whether the town should lease public space at Library Plaza to the pantry. The hearing is expected to be held during the selectmen’s regular 7:30 p.m. meeting at Town Hall. Martine Anderson, cochairwoman of the nonprofit pantry, said the space is centrally located, handicapped-accessible, and has great parking. Other entities, including town departments, have expressed interest in the same location. The pantry needs more room than it has at the First Congregational Church, she said. Pantry leaders had submitted a warrant article that would have approved a lease, but were told by the town’s attorney that Town Meeting does not have the authority to lease the space, she said.
